As an organizer and adult educator, I often return to bell hooks and Paulo Freire to guide my teaching pedagogy. I view teaching as a collaborative process where students can critically interrogate the world and imagine new possibilities. I am passionate about mentoring students and building deep relationships with local community organizations and unions to both better inform course content and offer opportunities for students to pursue community-engaged learning and research.
I always strive to foster agency (or, as one student described in my teaching evaluations, “give students the locus of control”) and cultivate a culture of empathy, hope, and curiosity in the classroom. I love experimenting with new ways of giving students control over the classroom–from ranked-choice-voting on course topics to co-lesson planning.
Below is my syllabus for LABOR/SOCIOL 290E: Political Economy and Labor.
